On Monday, British oil major Shell confirmed an agreement to acquire Canadian energy company ARC Resources for $16.4 billion. This transaction aims to increase Shell’s oil production by approximately 370,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Shell’s acquisition is designed to enhance the company’s long-term oil and gas production capabilities. CEO Wael Sawan stated that ARC Resources is a ‘high-quality, low-cost and top quartile low carbon intensity producer.’ He emphasized that this acquisition will enable Shell to strengthen its resource base for decades.

Sawan mentioned, ‘We are accessing uniquely positioned assets and welcoming colleagues that bring deep expertise which, combined with Shell’s strong basin level performance, provides a compelling proposition for shareholders.’ Terry Anderson, president and CEO of ARC Resources, expressed optimism about the deal and indicated that the company’s assets and staff would contribute significantly to Shell’s ambitions in Canada’s resource landscape.

Anderson noted that the firm would help Shell provide the secure energy that the world needs. The acquisition is projected to generate double-digit returns and enhance Shell’s free cash flow per share starting in 2027. Shell plans to compensate ARC Resources’ shareholders with 8.20 Canadian dollars ($6.03) in cash and a share exchange of 0.40247 ordinary shares for each ARC Resources share.
