Michigan Republicans are urging the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s ’86 45′ emblem seen during a television interview.
This suggestion follows an indictment against former FBI Director James Comey regarding a similar photo he shared on social media.
The Justice Department announced the charges against Comey on Tuesday, alleging he threatened President Donald Trump, who was the 45th president.
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that the DOJ might consider investigating Whitmer, stating, “other incidents of threats against the president of the United States, those will be investigated.”
Blanche emphasized the unique circumstances surrounding each case, explaining that the nature of the threat and the intent will influence decisions on probes.
Comey faces charges of making a threat against the president and transmitting a threat across state lines.
However, Blanche noted that the charges against Comey also come with a five-year statute of limitations.
The ’86 45′ incident involving Whitmer occurred in October 2020 during her appearance on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ when Trump was still in office.
At that time, Trump’s campaign claimed that ’86-ing’ could be shorthand for killing someone, while Whitmer’s team countered that it is commonly used in the restaurant industry.
The Michigan Republican Party’s official social media account questioned whether the DOJ would pursue an investigation of Whitmer.
This post has garnered nearly 2,000 shares, reflecting significant interest in the potential probe.
The Department of Justice has declined to comment further on the matter.
