U.S. skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is taking her first big travel step after a crash during the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. The 41-year-old Olympic medalist posted on Instagram an emotional photo reflecting her recovery journey.

This news comes months after a devastating crash that abruptly ended her Olympic comeback. Vonn was spotted at Los Angeles airport traveling with crutches, highlighting her ongoing recovery.

On February 8, 2026, Vonn crashed just 13 seconds into her women’s downhill run at the Winter Olympics in Italy. The crash resulted in a complex tibia fracture in her left leg, necessitating her airlift to a hospital.

Vonn has undergone multiple surgeries, with one surgery threatening amputation due to complications from compartment syndrome. She has had a total of five surgeries as part of her rigorous rehabilitation.

Throughout her recovery, Vonn has kept fans updated on her progress. Her journey has involved not only physical challenges but also emotional struggles.

In an interview with People, Vonn expressed the difficulties of her experience, particularly the loss of independence during her hospital stay. “It’s definitely been up and down,” she remarked about her mental health during rehab.

“I hate being dependent on people, and was pretty much 100% dependent for everything,” Vonn said, reflecting on her two and a half weeks of immobility in the hospital. “It was quite a challenge, just being in the hospital alone.”

Vonn described one particularly painful moment during her treatment, saying, “Halfway through, I started sweating. I was just in such extreme pain. I screamed at the top of my lungs: Get me out.”

She emphasized how the experience of enduring extreme pain has left a lasting emotional memory. “It just wouldn’t dissipate. It wouldn’t let up. It’s seared into my brain,” she stated.

Despite the physical and emotional challenges, Vonn has shown resilience as she continues on her road to recovery. Her journey remains a testament to her strength and determination.

As she moves forward, Vonn’s next steps in her recovery will undoubtedly be closely followed by fans and supporters.
