Caty McNally achieved a significant upset on April 24, 2026, at the Mutua Madrid Open.

She defeated World No. 10 Victoria Mboko in straight sets, marking her first victory against a Top 10 player.

This match, which lasted 1 hour and 19 minutes, ended with scores of 6-4, 6-1, advancing her to the third round for the first time.

McNally entered the match with a record of 0-8 against Top 10 players and 0-12 against the Top 20.

She had not won consecutive main-draw matches on clay in five years, making this victory particularly impactful.

In her journey to this moment, McNally faced eight months of recovery from wrist surgery in 2024.

She worked her way back into the PIF WTA Rankings, currently sitting at No. 76.

Previously, in 2023, she reached a singles high of No. 54 and demonstrated her skill by being the only player to win a set against Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon.

McNally’s doubles performance also saw her reach two WTA 500 finals in the past eight months.

Her win against Mboko was particularly notable, as she previously lost to her in straight sets at the Australian Open in January.

McNally reflected on her past performances against Top 10 opponents, admitting she often won a set but could not secure two.

After the match, McNally expressed pride in her performance, stating, “I feel like I’ve been knocking on the door for a little while with some of these really great players.”

She emphasized her determination and resilience during the match, which contributed to this victory.

Now, she looks forward to her next challenge against Katerina Siniakova.
