Nicola Coughlan, known for her role as Penelope Bridgerton, recently shared insights about her participation in Bridgerton’s fifth season. During an appearance on the Dish podcast on April 29, she stated, “Season five had started filming already, so I won’t be in it very much.” Coughlan expressed enthusiasm for returning, saying, “I’m always happy to come back. I think it’s a genuinely lovely job to come back to.”
As the series evolves, the focus shifts toward the budding romance between Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza. Coughlan, who took center stage in Season 3, described her current experience as quite enjoyable, stating, “I have it so good now ‘cause I come in for a few days.”
She added, “Yay! How is everyone? I’ll see you in two months. Bye! They’re working super super hard and I’m just like coming back. It’s lovely.” Despite her limited presence in the new season, Coughlan’s character has undergone significant development, especially following her decision to step away from her Lady Whistledown persona in Season 4.
Showrunner Jess Brownell highlighted this transition, mentioning that a new writer taking over could open doors to exploring a more diverse group of women. Brownell stated, “It’s really key for us to explore the lives of these women who do work, because it’s a time period in which women had so few options and so little agency.”
Brownell also pointed out that the narrative aims to showcase women who strive to improve their circumstances, saying, “Showing that there were women who didn’t just settle for what was handed to them, but tried their very best to make more of their station, it broadens the female experience in the show.”
As Penelope embraces her roles as a mother and wife, her departure from her pen name is fitting. Brownell remarked on Penelope’s growth arc, stating, “Penelope went through such a giant growth arc last season.”
Brownell continued, “She’s not the powerless girl who needs Whistledown to take back her voice anymore.” While Penelope acknowledges the power of gossip, she has recognized it is time to move on from that role.
As fans eagerly await the return of the ton, they can look forward to the new dynamics and character developments in Bridgerton. The series continues to explore rich narratives surrounding its diverse cast of characters.
