Lorenzo Musetti, a 24-year-old Italian tennis player, has faced injury challenges this season. He looks to rejuvenate his performance at the Mutua Madrid Open. Musetti previously retired at the Australian Open, leading Novak Djokovic before the quarter-finals.
Since then, he has participated in only three tournaments. Musetti experienced first-round exits at Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo. However, he showed promise with a quarter-final appearance in Barcelona.
“I have been dealing with some injuries and issues after the Australian Open, so I needed to take a little bit more time to recover,” Musetti told ATP Media. He emphasized the need for matches to regain his optimal form, especially in competitive settings.
Musetti expressed positive feelings about returning to Madrid, recalling fond memories from the previous year. He reported feeling healthy and eager to commence the tournament.
In 2025, Musetti had a strong clay-court season, achieving a 19-4 record. He made history as the first Italian to reach the semi-finals at all three Masters 1000 clay events: Monte-Carlo, Madrid, and Rome, as well as at Roland Garros.
Despite an early loss in Monte-Carlo to Valentin Vacherot, Musetti gained confidence from his performance in Barcelona. He secured victories over Martin Landaluce and Corentin Moutet, which helped him build rhythm ahead of his return to Madrid.
“It was, for sure, better than the others,” Musetti said, reflecting on his quarter-final run in Barcelona. He noted the importance of playing matches with the right mindset and practicing well.
Musetti believes that results will come as he balances match readiness and physical condition. His movement in Barcelona indicated progress, particularly during a challenging match against Moutet.
