Detroit secured a 111–101 victory over Cleveland in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on May 6, 2026. This win highlighted the team’s preparation and familiarity with their opponents.
Cleveland head coach Kenny Atkinson discussed how the teams’ previous encounters aided their scouting efforts. “We had a little bit of a cram session to prepare for the series,” Atkinson said. “Our players ask a lot of questions. These guys know plays and schemes as well as, if not better, than we do.”
Among the connections between the teams is Dennis Schroder, who played a significant role for the Pistons last season. Now with the Cavaliers, he previously assisted in stabilizing Detroit’s backup point guard position during their playoff run.
Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised Schroder’s contributions, stating, “We had a good time with Dennis. He helped us a lot with what we were trying to do, and he came in at the right time for both him and for us.” Bickerstaff added that Schroder’s experience provided valuable lessons for the players.
In Game 1, Schroder recorded nine points, three assists, and one rebound in 16 minutes. Much of his impact was felt during the third quarter, where he demonstrated his skillset effectively.
Schroder executed a smooth transition basket early in the game. He later displayed his quickness with a hesitation dribble and a crossover, finishing with a layup that narrowed the Pistons’ lead to four points.
His drives consistently collapsed the defense, allowing him to find open teammates. He assisted Max Strus, who contributed 19 points off the bench, further showcasing his ability to elevate teammates’ performances.
Last season, Schroder provided the Pistons with essential veteran leadership and versatility in their lineup. His transition to the Cavaliers has brought that same influential presence to Cleveland.
After signing a three-year, $45 million contract with the Sacramento Kings, Schroder was traded midseason to join a playoff contender. Following the trade of Darius Garland to the Los Angeles Clippers for James Harden, Atkinson recognized the need for a reliable ball handler alongside Harden and Donovan Mitchell.
The Pistons look to continue their momentum in the playoffs as they aim to advance further in the Eastern Conference. Their next challenge is set for later this week against the Cavaliers in Game 2.
