Jose Alvarado’s increased role with the Knicks comes after Landry Shamet’s decline in the rotation. This shift is attributed to Shamet’s struggles and Alvarado’s performance when called upon. Coach Mike Brown discussed this evolution after practice on Monday.

Shamet’s difficulties included a 30.2 percent shooting rate from 3-point range since March 1. His playing time decreased significantly during the playoffs, going from 18 minutes in Game 1 to just three minutes in Game 3. Alvarado has stepped up, taking advantage of Shamet’s reduced role.

“It’s a little bit of a story of how it evolved,” Brown stated about the rotation changes. He explained that after winning Game 1 with Shamet, he decided to switch to Miles McBride for Game 2, which disrupted the team’s flow. Alvarado’s solid performance led to him receiving more playing time.

Brown emphasized the need for players to stay ready, noting, “Everybody has to be ready to play because anybody’s number can be called at any time.” He highlighted how Alvarado was not part of the initial playoff games but remained prepared when his moment came. Alvarado performed well once given the opportunity.

Jalen Brunson, another key player for the Knicks, shared his thoughts on teammate Donte DiVincenzo, who suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. Brunson expressed his support, stating, “He seemed in good spirits… that’s my brother. Tough to see, but he’ll be back stronger.”

The Knicks have reported a clean injury status ahead of Game 5, while the Hawks will be without Jock Landale due to a high ankle sprain. Brunson had briefly left Game 4 due to an incident but confirmed that his leg feels “great” now.

The Knicks continue to adjust their strategy as they progress through the playoffs. With Alvarado’s rising influence, they aim to capitalize on every opportunity presented in their upcoming games.
