Jared McCain scored a playoff career-high 18 points on Thursday night, helping the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 125-107 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2.

McCain shot 7-for-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from three-point range, showcasing his evolving role since joining the Thunder.

Originally drafted 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2024 NBA Draft, McCain faced challenges in his rookie season due to a torn meniscus and later injuries that limited his playtime in year two.

The Thunder acquired him in February for a first-round pick and three second-round selections, a move that caught him off guard.

After the game, McCain expressed his gratitude, stating, “Man, I thank God every day. This is a blessing. When I first got traded, it was heartbreaking at that point. I didn’t understand what was going on. But coming here, it has been nothing but love. And I’m so grateful.”

He continued, “I share my gratitude with the team, maybe a little too much sometimes. Sometimes I get on their nerves. But I really appreciate them and everything they do for me and my career. It’s worked out. It’s a blessing to be here. I’m truly, truly grateful every single day. Every moment, I thank God every day for being in OKC.”

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised McCain’s contributions, particularly noting a selfless extra pass he made to Ajay Mitchell in Game 1 as an example of what the team values.

Daigneault said, “I just think there are certain qualities a player has that resonate with this particular locker room. Professionalism is one of them. Commitment to your craft is another one. Competitiveness, the willingness to compete and the willingness to play inside of the team. If you do those things on this team, you earn pretty immediate respect.”

He emphasized that McCain’s extra pass in Game 1 demonstrated his understanding of the team’s dynamics, stating, “This team recognizes that, and you’re part of the club pretty quickly.”

McCain’s transition to the Thunder appears to have provided him with the fresh start he needed, and he has embraced it fully.

As he continues to shine in the postseason, McCain’s next challenge will be helping the Thunder build on their momentum in the upcoming game.
