The San Antonio Spurs received a pre-playoff address from former coach Gregg Popovich this week. Popovich spoke to the team before their first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Spurs will play Game 1 on Sunday.
Gregg Popovich is a Hall of Famer and franchise fixture. He continues to rehabilitate from a stroke suffered on November 2, 2024. The 77-year-old has been present at the team’s practice facility.
Guard Stephon Castle shared details of Popovich’s message. “[Popovich said] just to be us,” Castle recounted. “He told us not to do anything different from the regular season.
Popovich gave the team perspective on their successful season. He highlighted how well they have been playing. He noted the strong position they put themselves in.
Castle relayed the core advice from the address. “So just keep doing what we’ve been doing,” he said. The Spurs finished with the NBA’s second-best record at 62-20.
They also won the Southwest Division title. Most of the team, including Victor Wembanyama, will make their playoff debut. The team is leaning on Popovich’s postseason knowledge.
