pinalti.com – Italian tennis player Flavio Cobolli defeated Alexander Zverev in the BMW Open semifinals on Saturday. The 6-3, 6-3 victory in Munich marked his first career win over a top-five opponent. Cobolli broke down in tears on court immediately after the match.
The emotional reaction followed the death of a young friend. Cobolli had learned on Friday that a 13-year-old friend from his club in Italy had died. The 23-year-old later dedicated the win to his friend, Mattia, on social media.
Cobolli, ranked world No. 13, dominated with his serve. He hit seven aces to Zverev’s zero during the match. He also won six of the German’s nine second-serve points.
The Italian player won ten consecutive points in one stretch. This victory reversed his head-to-head record against Zverev. He had previously lost both of their prior meetings.
Cobolli can now win the fourth ATP title of his career on Sunday. He will need another top-ten victory to achieve this. His opponent in the final will be world No. 6 Ben Shelton.
Ben Shelton defeated Alex Molcan in the other semifinal match. Shelton is now in the Munich final for the second consecutive year. He lost the 2025 final to Alexander Zverev.
