Star wide receiver A.J. Brown remains with the Philadelphia Eagles as another work week ends. Recent NFL insider reports indicate a potential trade deal will be finalized after June 1. That date is key for the Eagles’ salary cap relief.
If Philadelphia trades Brown before June 1, it faces a $43.5 million dead cap hit. A post-June 1 deal would ensure only a $16 million salary cap hit. The New England Patriots are reportedly ‘front-runners’ to acquire Brown.
CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones wrote about the Patriots’ status on Thursday. He called the Patriots the frontrunner to acquire the All Pro receiver. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport echoed a similar sentiment the same day.
Jones cited Brown’s decision not to speak publicly about his situation. He wrote that Brown seems to ‘understand’ a trade is on the horizon. Sources theorized Brown may have an understanding a deal will happen this summer.
Jonathan Jones quoted sources on Brown’s public stance. ‘Brown has done nothing publicly to try to punch his way out of Philly,’ Jones said. ‘Making a public stink does not help his position.’
From the Eagles’ perspective, the organization is moving forward as if Brown will not be with the team for Week 1. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported this outlook. He said the Eagles will ‘operate’ in the 2026 NFL Draft with that mindset.
Jeff Darlington spoke on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ Friday morning. ‘This is a team that will be operating in this draft as if they eventually will be moving A.J. Brown,’ Darlington said. He noted this is true whether they ultimately do it or not.
This year’s NFL Draft is particularly deep with wide receiver prospects. Philadelphia currently holds the No. 23 overall pick in the first round. The team also has the No. 54 pick in the second round.
Considering the reporting surrounding Brown, the franchise seems likely to heavily consider selecting a wide receiver. Darlington noted that things can change regarding Brown’s status. The reporter noted that even with potential changes, the current plan is clear.
