Yankees Face Tough Decision on Spencer Jones After Injury

Jasson Dominguez's injury raises questions for the Yankees about promoting Spencer Jones from the minors.

The New York Yankees are facing a tough decision regarding Spencer Jones following Jasson Dominguez’s injury. Dominguez was hit on the elbow during the Yankees’ loss to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, which may lead to a stint on the injured list.

In light of this development, the Yankees recently designated Randal Grichuk for assignment. Although Grichuk could be brought back, he is not an appealing option, and Max Schuemann is currently on the roster but lacks confidence from fans.

Given these circumstances, promoting Spencer Jones to the major leagues seems like a logical move. Jones has been striking out, fanning 37 times over 110 plate appearances, but he boasts a slash line of .242/.364/.538 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in just 26 games.

His strikeout rate has significantly decreased in recent weeks, and he is performing exceptionally well at the plate. Unlike Dominguez, who struggled in the outfield, Jones is a strong defender capable of providing rest to Aaron Judge.

At 25 years old, Jones is nearing the point where he can no longer be considered a prospect. The Yankees initially sent him down to Triple-A due to the crowded outfield situation, but the time to act is now.

Every day Jones remains in the minors, his value diminishes. Teams are less likely to trade for a player who hasn’t made his major league debut by age 25.

If Dominguez is placed on the injured list, Jones should be promoted immediately. He excelled during Spring Training and is currently on a hitting streak in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Promoting Jones would not only benefit the Yankees but could also showcase him for potential trades. Keeping him in the minors could negatively impact his value leading up to the August trade deadline.

The Yankees drafted Jones out of Vanderbilt in 2022, hoping he would become a cornerstone player. It’s time for the Yankees to take the initiative and promote Jones to the big leagues and see his potential.
