Sidney Crosby contemplates the future of the Penguins after a playoff loss to the Flyers.

Sidney Crosby remained in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ locker room after their elimination by the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers won Game 6 in overtime, giving them a 4-2 series victory. This loss raises questions about the future of the team’s core players.

After the game, Crosby stated that it might be too early to discuss the future of the core trio, which includes Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. He mentioned that they would need time to evaluate everything. Crosby, Malkin, and Letang have been teammates since 2006 and have won three Stanley Cups together.

This trio is notable for being the longest-tenured in North American sports history. They surpassed the previous record held by the New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada three years ago. In the playoff series against the Flyers, Crosby led the Penguins with five points, while Malkin contributed two goals and an assist.

Letang had two goals, both of which were game-winners. Crosby, 38, is under contract through next season, while Letang, 39, is signed through 2028. Malkin, also 39, will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Malkin has indicated a desire to remain with the Penguins next season and plans to discuss his future with general manager Kyle Dubas after the playoffs. Both Malkin and Letang were unavailable for comment after Game 6.

Crosby reflected on his long history with Malkin and Letang, expressing that it’s hard to articulate their significance as teammates. He noted, “Honestly, it’s something that we’ve probably just gotten used to.”
