Newcastle United Plans to Transfer Yoane Wissa After One Season

Newcastle United is reportedly considering selling Yoane Wissa after just one season.

Newcastle United is reportedly evaluating the sale of Yoane Wissa this summer, a surprising turn for a player acquired for £55 million last year. The DR Congo international has struggled to perform at Tyneside due to fitness issues and tactical changes under Eddie Howe.

Wissa joined St James’ Park with high expectations, taking the iconic number 9 jersey once worn by legends like Alan Shearer. However, his transfer quickly spiraled into a nightmare for both the player and the club.

Wissa was signed from Brentford on the final day of the transfer window in September, responding to Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool. He failed to replicate his standout performances from the previous season in West London.

The 29-year-old’s season was hindered even before it began. A knee injury sustained while on international duty delayed his competitive debut until December. Since then, he has only played in 24 matches for Newcastle, spending much of his time on the bench.

Wissa started only one of the last 16 matches for The Magpies and managed to score just three goals. According to The Athletic, Newcastle plans to actively explore the possibility of offloading Wissa during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Despite the substantial investment made only eight months ago, the Newcastle board is willing to approve the sale, even if it results in a significant financial loss. Wissa remains under a long-term contract and has expressed his desire to stay and fight for his position.

However, club officials seem to have different plans. Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League and facing a season without European competition, balancing the squad and adhering to financial regulations have become priorities ahead of the summer transfer window.

Manager Eddie Howe has publicly shown support for Wissa, acknowledging the various obstacles faced by the striker. He referred to the season as a ‘difficult’ one for Wissa.
