King Charles III’s recent visit to the United States included a lavish dinner but a notable snub from New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani. This uneven reception unfolded as the king attended a wreath-laying ceremony to honor 9/11 victims.

On the prior day, Charles received praise in Washington, D.C., where he connected well with President Donald Trump and delivered a well-received speech to Congress. His New York City visit, however, turned sour when Mamdani made it clear he would not meet the king privately.

The mayor’s refusal was tied to the historical ownership of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which was taken during British colonization in 1849. Mamdani’s office stated, ‘The mayor will not meet privately with King Charles. But the mayor will be at the wreath-laying ceremony today,’ as confirmed by press secretary Joe Calvello.

This response highlights the contrast between the royal treatment Charles received in Washington and the politically charged atmosphere in New York City. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has pledged to address issues related to elitism and colonialism, making the king’s visit a sensitive topic.

During the ceremony at the World Trade Center, Mamdani’s thoughts on the Koh-i-Noor diamond were evident. He mentioned, ‘If I was to speak to the king separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.’

The diamond, weighing 106 carats and currently set in the crown of the queen mother, has sparked debates regarding its rightful ownership since its transfer to Queen Victoria. Critics argue it was taken unjustly from Duleep Singh, a 10-year-old maharajah whose kingdom was seized by British forces.

As Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the diamond’s potential return, the ceremony at the World Trade Center proceeded without the private audience. This divergence underscores the complexities surrounding royal visits in contemporary political climates.

Looking ahead, King Charles III’s next engagements remain in focus as he continues his efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties.
