North Carolina secured a significant addition to its roster by landing international big man Sayon Keita, who is viewed as a top prospect for the future.

The 18-year-old from Mali chose the Tar Heels over notable programs such as Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and UConn.

Keita’s familiarity with the program dates back to a visit to Chapel Hill last fall during Hubert Davis’s tenure as head coach.

This recruitment is part of a transformative offseason for UNC, which included the hiring of former NBA champion Michael Malone.

The 6-foot-11 center previously played for FC Barcelona in Spain’s Liga ACB and the EuroLeague, participating in 13 games this season.

In six EuroLeague games, Keita averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds, shooting 58.3 percent from the field, with all attempts made from 2-point range.

He also recorded 0.4 points and 1.7 rebounds per game across seven Liga ACB appearances.

Keita showcased stronger performance with Barcelona’s U22 team, averaging 8.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in league play.

His rise to prominence began at the NBPA Top 100 Camp and NBA Academy Games, where he averaged 13.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, and four blocks per game.

These performances significantly raised his profile among scouts in Europe and the United States.

Adam Finkelstein, director of basketball scouting for CBS Sports and 247Sports, stated on the TarHeel247 Basketball Podcast that Keita would be the top player in the Class of 2026 if eligible.

Finkelstein emphasized, “The bottom line is he’s big, he’s long, he’s athletic, he’s super mobile. I mean, he can really, really move for his size.”

He added, “When you look at the centers in that class, he is more talented and a better long-term prospect than any of those guys.”

Keita’s commitment to UNC is a pivotal step for the program as it aims to build a strong frontcourt for the future.
