Bellarmine Mugabe, the youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late former leader Robert Mugabe, has been deported from South Africa following a court order in Johannesburg.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to pointing a firearm and illegal immigration earlier this month after being arrested for a shooting incident at his home.

Mugabe was implicated in the shooting of a 23-year-old man, who was critically injured and subsequently hospitalized.

On February 19, police responded to the shooting at Mugabe’s residence located in the upscale Hyde Park area of Johannesburg.

Prosecutors stated that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between Mugabe, his cousin Tobias Matonhodze, and the victim, who was shot twice in the back while attempting to escape.

Authorities have not yet recovered the firearm used in the incident.

Mugabe was ordered to pay a fine of $36,000 (£26,700) before being allowed to leave South Africa.

His co-accused, Matonhodze, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, illegal immigration, possession of ammunition, and defeating the ends of justice, receiving a three-year prison sentence.

Initially, Mugabe faced an attempted murder charge, but it was dropped after Matonhodze’s guilty plea.

The charge of pointing a firearm was related to a separate incident, which Mugabe agreed to have heard together.

The judge noted that the firearm was a toy but could lead someone to believe it was real.

This incident is not Mugabe’s first legal trouble; he has faced multiple brushes with the law.

In 2024, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe, but failed to appear in court after being released on bail.

The following year, he was arrested again for assaulting a security guard at a mining site in Mazowe, with that case ongoing.

Bellarmine Mugabe is one of two sons Robert Mugabe had with his second wife, Grace Mugabe.

The former president, who died in 2019, ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years before being ousted in a coup in 2017.
