Mariano Navone achieved his first ATP Tour title this month in Bucharest. The 25-year-old raised his arms in celebration, displaying a smile of disbelief and relief. He had previously fallen short in his last two tour-level finals, including one in Bucharest in 2024.
Navone reflected on his journey, remembering his childhood dreams of such moments. ‘When I was a kid, I dreamed of winning these tournaments on the big stages,’ Navone stated. His dream began at a young age, as he started playing tennis at Club Atlético 9 de Julio.
As a child, he admired Argentine players like Nalbandian and Del Potro. Navone recalled, ‘I want to be him,’ expressing his aspirations to emulate their success. His path to this achievement was challenging and lengthy.
‘It’s a very long process,’ Navone explained. He started dreaming of success in tennis at five or six years old, and after 20 years, his dreams materialized. His victory at the ATP 250 event returned him to the Top 50 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time in 13 months.
Following a second-round loss to Alexander Zverev at the Mutua Madrid Open, Navone now stands as the top seed at the ATP Challenger 175 event in Cagliari. He previously won this event in 2024, the same year he made history at Roland Garros.
Navone became the first player in the Open Era to be seeded in his first major main draw. Since then, he has solidified his position on the ATP Tour, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 29 in June 2024.
Navone has made sporadic appearances on the ATP Challenger circuit, consistently performing well. His title in Cap Cana marked his biggest career achievement and his first hard-court title at any level. ‘I was born on clay courts. I never played on hard courts until 2021, 2022,’ he noted.
Navone expressed his excitement about the tournament, stating, ‘It was a really, really good tournament. I was super excited in the trophy ceremony.’ Just three weeks later, he secured his championship in Bucharest, fulfilling a lifelong ambition.
