Mirra Andreeva continued her strong performance on Wednesday by defeating Dalma Galfi at the Madrid Open. The 18-year-old has quickly established herself as a serious contender for the title.

Andreeva started her campaign on Thursday with a victory over Panna Udvardy, winning 7-5, 6-2. She then followed up with a solid win against Galfi, finishing 6-3, 6-2.

Next, she will face Anna Bondar, who previously defeated her at the 2023 Lausanne Ladies Open. Andreeva’s win over Galfi marked her 14th career round of 16 appearance at WTA 1000 events.

According to OptaAce, only Coco Gauff has reached more round of 16 appearances among teenagers since the format’s introduction in 2009. Gauff reached her 17th round of 16 at the WTA 1000 level after beating Sorana Cirstea.

Andreeva’s projected path in the Madrid Open includes potential matches against Leylah Fernandez or Ann Li in the quarter-finals. If she advances, she could face Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals and Coco Gauff in the final.

Andreeva’s matches so far have shown her capability at a high level. However, she will need to improve her first-serve percentage to succeed against stronger opponents.

Against Galfi, Andreeva made 58.2 percent of her first serves, winning 65.6 percent of those points. Higher success rates will be essential in later rounds if she encounters players like Sabalenka or Rybakina.
